The Huntington plant is the principal production site in the USA, supported by other facilities at Burnaugh, Kentucky and Elkhart, Indiana. The Huntington facility is the largest of its type in the world devoted exclusively to the development, production and sale of nickel alloys. Within the 130-acre (53 ha) site, there are fully integrated production facilities, research and development laboratories and administrative offices.
Alloying facilities at Huntington and Burnaugh include two 70,000 lb (31.8 tonne) electric arc furnaces and a 48,000 lb (21.6 tonne) vacuum induction melting furnace; AOD, vacuum arc and electroslag remelting, and ball mills for the mechanical alloying powder metallurgy process.
Hot working equipment includes a 110 in. 2HI/4HI primary rolling mill, a 5,000 ton (44.5 MN) forge press, a 6,000 ton (53.4 MN) extrusion press and rolling mills for billet, flat products, bar and wire. The hot strip reversing mill rolls coils up to 60 in. (1,520 mm) wide, weighing up to 25,000 lbs. (11.25 tons). For hot-rolled plate products, there are support facilities for annealing, shot blasting, shearing, leveling, and cutting.
Cold-worked products include tubulars made by drawing or pilgering with support facilities for annealing, pickling and U-bending. Rod, bar and hexagon are made by cold drawing with support annealing, pickling, centerless grinding and straightening equipment. Flat products (sheet and strip) are made by cold rolling at Huntington and at Elkhart, Indiana, where the facility is centered around MKW and Z rolling mills producing coils of sheet/strip down to 0.005 in. (0.125 mm) thick and up to 48 in. (1,220 mm) wide, backed up by annealing and multiple slitting equipment.
Research and Development
The research laboratories at Huntington have state-of-the-art equipment for production quality controls, process technology development and research into new materials, including a fully equipped pilot plant for product and process research and development.
